Changing Your Toilet Tank-to-Bowl Gaskets
Переглядів 83 тис.7 років тому
At some point, every toilet will need to have gaskets replaced. Though it may sound like an intimidating procedure, it's not very difficult at all - let Mike show you how! For the fill valve, a crescent wrench will...

Testing Your Toilet Flapper for Leaks

Been a while since your toilet has had any work done on it? Worried about leaks? Carolyn can show you how to test a toilet flapper for leaks that could be silent and virtually undetectable. How to Measure a Shower Drain Cover

Carolyn addresses one of the most common questions our customer service team encounters: how to correctly measure a shower drain cover. Thank you so much. I needed to understand the drain we have in our new shower stall. I have to clean the pipe as it is backing up. The problem I am having is getting the cover off. It is stuck on that. I am afraid our contractor, who installed the shower may have glued the cover on. He also didn't level the cement floor underneath but that is a separate issue altogether. Is it typically stiff to take off? the drain cover. I do not want to break it. The contractor didn't leave that metal rectangular tool in the drain either. So I have to purchase that tool you mentioned with the four prongs. How do we take the drain cover off please?

    • @plumbingsupplycom
      @plumbingsupplycom 6 років тому

      You might try using some penetrating oil around the threads and leaving it for a while to see if it helps any. Using a different kind of tool - maybe a pipe wrench, channel locks or a strap wrench - might also help. Your safest bet is to call a plumber!

    Some notes: If you are strong, removal of the tank is not necessary. I never take the tank off unless it is leaking. Also, this is just my opinion, after having installed hundreds of toilets, I have never seen a sub-flush ring cause a wobble. If the bolts are being held securely, the downward pressure transmitted through the flange of the toilet base to the floor will hold it securely. In a case like this, I would have simply stacked wax or waxless seals. Also, most wax seals now come with a "horn" integrated. in this case I would have dropped a ring with horn into the hole, then stacked a hornless ring on top. I know they say you should always put them on the bottom of the toilet, but I don't, and I've never had one leak for that reason. Also, as noted above, it would have been good practice to scrape off the old caulk line while the bowl was off, and apply new caulking for added insurance against rocking, and to seal against dripping urine seeping under the toilet when guys have bad aim. I see no problem with adding the extender he did, other than I have definitely had rocking caused by a ring that was above flush to the floor. That wasn't a problem this time though.

    I know how to do this, but the new shower arm directions called for 2-3 wraps of PTFE tape, which I feel is not enough. I think it is always good to see a refresher video b-4 doing this task. btw, my old shower arm has some of the thread broken off when I moved in. Putting on new arm b-4 installing a new shower head and filter. My old one only needed a nudge with my small pipe wrench to get it loose. There was old pipe dope on the old arm, I used the pipe cleaning brushes you use b-4 sweating copper, to clean the threads in the fitting in the wall as much as I could b-4 installing the new arm. They showed a narrow PTFE tape, on the video, but their thread may have been different. I always use Pipe dope with TFE in it best of both worlds. For a 2 valve shower, turn off the water supply outside, open a hose bib, then water pressure will drain out. Before you put the shower arm escutcheon, you can shine a flashlight inside the wall to see if it leaks. Always flush the shower arm by turning on the water to clear any debris before putting on the shower head. What ever you do, do not buy the Glacier Bay shower head arm, the threads are not true NPT standards, its made in China. Hope this helps anyone who watches in 2018 :)

    Mike did a great job explaining how to change the shower arm. The only thing I would have liked to see was the inside of the wall with a flash light before the new arm was attached. I do not know why I am so paranoid about this... I think it is because I understand how much new damage can be done if this leaks. I may bite the bullet and give it a shot. Earlier in the day so I can call for help if need. Thanks Mike! I'll be sure to check out ur other videos.

    • @plumbingsupplycom
      @plumbingsupplycom 6 років тому

      Yes, you should be fine substituting dope for tape. If you're working with plastic pipe/fittings, make sure to check the label on your pipe dope to be sure it will not interact with the plastic.

    • @plumbingsupplycom

      Hi David! Pretty much every shower arm out there will use 1/2" IPS threads - this is the standard followed by manufacturers. So you shouldn't have any problems with different brands, and there's no need to buy a specific branded part if you can find a better-value equivalent.

    • @plumbingsupplycom
      @plumbingsupplycom 6 років тому

      Hi Scott - it looks like there wasn't much caulk around the toilet in the first place (most of that outline on the floor is from rust/water), but yes, the area should've been cleaned and the toilet re-caulked after being set on the new flange (that was apparently done later).

    • @ryanstevens1855
      @ryanstevens1855 6 років тому

      Scott France caulking toilets is unnecessary. All it does is pull up your tile floor if you ever have to remove the toilet. There are a ton of videos on youtube demonstrating why you shouldn't caulk toilets to the floor.

    So if the bolts were so solid they had to be cut, why would the toilet wobble if it was secured tight enough? I get the flange needed fixed regardless but I don't see how that is the reason it would wobble. To me and I'm not a plumber tight bolt would mean the elimination of the wobble problem.

    • @plumbingsupplycom
      @plumbingsupplycom 6 років тому

      While the bolts were tight (though the main reason the hacksaw was used was due to corrosion), they were still attaching to the flange below the floor. Due to that flange location and the design of the underside of the toilet, that toilet-to-flange connection wasn't flush (and instead had a small gap due to the incorrect flange placement). Add the resulting water damage around the area, and you have the wobble.
